Ice Cream Fact #3 - Ice Cream standards

Did you know that ice cream can have different qualities?

Picture this:

MOIC’s Pint Shop ice cream aisle, 2018

MOIC’s Pint Shop ice cream aisle, 2018

You're at the store in the frozen desserts aisle, and you see the wonderful gallery of ice cream choices at your fingertips, just behind those glass panels. So many options!! :O :D (I love going to the store just to see what ice cream they have)

You look at the ice creams and your eyes run across and see words such as "Premium" or even "Super premium"! - What do these mean?

What you're seeing is the quality of the ice creams on these labels, based on overrun and fat content.

And what’s overrun? Overrun is the amount of air incorporated into the ice cream - it’s what makes ice creams taste airy and not a block of ice.

  • $ Economy contains minimum quantities of overrun what constitutes ice cream (i.e. 10% milkfat).

  • $$ Regular / Standard meets the overrun. Light & airy. Think Dreyer’s, Blue Bell.

  • $$$ Premium ice cream has low overrun + higher contains between 12-14 % milk fat. Kind of dense.

  • $$$$ Super Premium contains very low overrun, and has between 14-16% milk fat. Super dense!

  • There is even Ultra Premium, that has more than 16% milk fat! Probably $$$$$ at this point.

Most of the time when we buy any store brand ice cream, we are consuming Regular or Standard, which is typically any store brand ice cream.

Specialty ice creams such as Ben & Jerry's, Haagen Dazs, and Jeni's are considered premium. Some of Trader Joe's ice cream are also premium too, such as their Vanilla and Ultra Chocolate. (I love Ultra Chocolate ! <3 )

My favorite ice cream so far from Trader Joe’s.

National Ice Cream Month 2020!

Hi everyone!

It is July, and that means..... it’s National Ice Cream month again! :D

To kick off National Ice Cream month, here’s an ice cream fact of the day!

🍦Fact:

Did you know that ice cream cannot be refrozen? Well, it will... but you won’t like it refrozen. It actually refreezes into a different texture - icy and not creamy at all!

This is mainly because of how ice cream (key word = cream) is made. Ice cream is churned, and churning of the ice cream whips air into the cream, so there is a lot of air bubbles or pockets within the cream. That’s why ice creams can be light, fluffy and creamy ( my favorites are those that are super creamy!!)

When ice cream melts, the air bubbles go away - thus when you refreeze it there are no air bubbles, just ice crystals. It’s just flavored ice - a popsicle, essentially.

Therefore, eat your ice cream! Make sure too your freezer works when you buy your ice cream from the store :)

Fact #1 // National Ice Cream Month

FUN FACT #1

Way back when in 1984, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed the following:

  • July as National Ice Cream Month
  • The third Sunday of July is National Ice Cream Day!

The month of July is especially fitting because summer temperatures reach their peak (i.e. NOW lol) during this time! New York, Houston, Los Angeles, and major cities are hitting the high 90s, so what better way to cool off than with ice cream in hand!

It's NATIONAL ICE CREAM MONTH! :D

It's July 1st - therefore, it's officially the first day of National Ice Cream month!!! I am so incredibly excited! :D (much to Jason's dismay lol). We're having a heat wave in New York, so this is the perfect time to open up (many) ice cream tubs and cool down.

For each day of this month, I will post an ice cream fact!

TALENTI ON SALE @ WHOLE FOODS!

Talenti_Columbus Circle.jpg

O.M.G. Total impulse buy. LOL.
It was on a whim that I walked to Whole Foods at Columbus Circle,  internally debating on the way whether to buy dinner and dessert. I decided against it after pacing around the hot bar for at least 10 minutes.

I made a decision to walk and see the ice cream section, and lo and behold, I saw a flurry of yellow tags and could not believe my eyes.

$3.99 SALE for Talenti gelato?! Definitely yes!! It was such a shock to see, especially after last week's grocery shopping fail at Pioneer Supermarket, where all but two lonely pints were taken. (and on a $3.99 sale).

Talenti flavors I bought were:
🍦Belgian Chocolate
🍦Caramel Cookie Crunch
🍦Fudge Brownie
🍦Simply Strawberry

I chose these flavors since I (a) have not tried the flavor before, or (b) do not eat these flavors too often. My favorite Talenti flavor of all time is Black Raspberry chocolate chip. Mmm.

I also saw there was a sale in the Van Leeuwen pint section too... $5.99 per pint, which is better than their usual sticker price of $7.99. Eesh!

Van Leeuwen flavors I bought:
🍦Earl Grey (duh! How could you NOT get their signature flavor)
🍦Cookies & Cream (why not).

I consider today a success. :)
